South African CV Format Guide

South African CVs typically run two to three pages for experienced candidates and one to two pages for entry-level applicants. Use a clean, standard font at 11–12 pt, clear section headings, and plenty of white space. Recruiters scan, not read, on first pass.

📋

Correct Section Order

Personal details → Professional summary → Work experience (most recent first) → Education → Skills → References

📏

Length by Experience

Entry-level: 1–2 pages. Mid-career: 2–3 pages. Senior or government submissions may include annexures separately.

📧

Professional Contact Details

Use a professional email address. Include a working mobile number. A LinkedIn profile URL is a bonus for private-sector roles.

POPIA Privacy Reminder

Do not include your ID number, race, religion, or home address on your CV. These are protected personal details under POPIA.

Writing a Strong Professional Summary

Your summary is the first thing a recruiter reads. Keep it to 3–4 sentences. Lead with your job title, years of experience, and your two strongest skills. Close with the type of role or environment you are targeting.

✦ Example — Administration & Office Support

"Detail-oriented Administration Clerk with four years of experience in public-sector records management, client-facing reception, and high-volume document processing. Proficient in MS Office and SAP. Seeking a permanent role in a government department or SOE where precision and service delivery matter."

✦ Example — Entry-Level Candidate

"Motivated Matric graduate with a National Certificate in Business Administration (NQF Level 3). Completed a six-month learnership with hands-on experience in filing, data capturing, and customer queries. Eager to grow within a structured private-sector or government environment."

Describing Your Work Experience

List each role in reverse chronological order. For each position, include the job title, employer name, province, and dates. Under each role, write 3–5 bullet points that describe outcomes, not just duties.

✓ Outcome-focused bullets

  • Processed 150+ insurance claims per week with 99% accuracy
  • Reduced filing backlog by 40% within 3 months
  • Trained 5 new admin staff on document management system
  • Maintained zero client complaints over 18-month period

✗ Duty-focused bullets to avoid

  • Responsible for filing
  • Answered phones
  • Helped customers
  • Did administrative tasks as required

Government Job CV Requirements

🏛
Government applications have strict document requirements

Attach certified copies of your Matric certificate, qualification, and ID. Complete and sign the Z83 form. Quote the exact post reference number from the advert. Non-compliance is grounds for automatic disqualification.

  1. 1
    Match the advert exactly

Copy the post title, reference number, and department name precisely as listed. Panels check this against HR requirements.

  2. 2
List all qualifications with NQF levels

Include NQF levels where known. Government evaluators work from NQF frameworks.

  3. 3
    Certify your documents

Certified copies must carry an original commissioner of oaths stamp and must not be older than six months.

  4. 4
Include proof of driver's licence if required

Many government posts require a Code 8/B or Code 10/C licence. Include a certified copy if the advert specifies it.

  5. 5
Complete and sign the Z83 form fully

Every section of the Z83 must be filled in. An incomplete or unsigned form will be rejected without exception.
